Work is underway to establish the FMI, this aims to overcome problems currently faced by doctors with an interest in informatics: no career structure, inconsistent remuneration, isolation, lack of systemic approach and inadequate appraisal/revalidation. It would define the specialty, set entry requirements and a curriculum, much as royal colleges in other medical specialties do. RCP and RCGP will be the sponsoring colleges.
